Koljonvirta history surroundings

From the grounds of the author and journalist Juhani Aho (nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twelve times) museum, a history trail of approximately one kilometer starts, where you can, in addition to outdoor activities, get to know the battle stations of the Koljonvirta River. Remnants of the past can be seen on the path through peaceful forests. Artillery stations, military dugouts and landscapes beyond the waterways whisper of the fierce battles of the past, the everyday life and hopes of soldiers. The guide boards along the path tell about the progress of the battle of Koljonvirta, the positions and armament, the death and the aftermath. An additional half-kilometer loop tells about the life of soldiers at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and about a destructive phase of the battle, which has been called the Bloody Night of Iisalmi.

TIP: At the end of Mansikkaniemi, along the nature trail, you can sit down to eat snacks by the campfire in the beautiful lake scenery.

Please note that the nature trail can be difficult to navigate in places!
